Why We Have Come Together
Indiana ranks at the bottom in many important health metrics including tobacco use, obesity, infant mortality and opioid abuse — and these are just a few critical examples. Our progress toward improvement is impeded by Indiana’s low public health spending per capita.
This shameful position contributes to higher health care spending, challenges for employers who want to provide health insurance, premature deaths, poor work and school attendance, and perpetuation of poverty. Our terrible health measures create a negative image for Indiana, which can make it more difficult to recruit new businesses and professionals looking for a healthy place to live, work and raise a family.
This Alliance will ultimately tackle public health issues like obesity, infant mortality and opioid abuse. Our first priority will be to substantially reduce tobacco usage, which is the leading cause of preventable death in Indiana. Together we can pave the path to Hoosier Health!

Why Join the Alliance?
Indiana’s position as one of the nation’s unhealthiest states impacts all Hoosiers on an economic level. Ultimately, we believe that these embarrassing health metrics will impact the state’s economy. The Alliance for a Healthier Indiana will tackle these public health issues but we need key partners in this policy and educational battle. The Alliance for a Healthier Indiana’s goal is to improve these health metrics and assist state and local policymakers in enacting sound policy.
The Alliance is beginning to see victories in the public policy arena but much work remains to be accomplished.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are health indicators?
Health indicators are measurable characteristics of a population which can be used to describe the health of that population. Health indicators can be used to define public health problems, to indicate change over time in the health of a population or to define differences in the health of populations. A few common health indicators include: life expectancy; infant mortality rate; prevalence and incidence of obesity, diabetes, asthma and cancer; and determinants of health, including tobacco and alcohol consumption.
Where did the county indicators and health rankings data come from?
The county-level data comes from a number of sources. To create this website, the Alliance pulled statistics from Indiana INdicators and County Health Rankings. We also chose to incorporate other data from the Indiana State Department of Health, the Indiana University Prevention Resource Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
How can I access additional health resources?
Statewide and county-specific health service providers can be found using the Directory. You may look through the list of all providers, search for a specific provider or type your county into the search bar to find a comprehensive list of services close to home.
How did the Alliance compile this list of resources?
The Directory includes all hospitals and health departments in Indiana. We also partnered with organizations that focus on one or more of the Alliance’s four key issues and asked that they submit their information. If you would like your organization to be added to the directory please email info@healthierindiana.org.
I know of a resource in my community that is not listed here. How do I submit it?
If you know of a resource or event in your community that focuses on tackling tobacco use, battling opioid abuse, taking on obesity and reducing infant mortality, please submit it for review here.
I support the Alliance’s goals. How do I get involved?
There are several ways to support the Alliance and help us work toward a #HealthierIndiana. You can sign up for our e-newsletter, follow us on social media, share our social media posts with your network and ask others to get involved – these are a few quick and easy ways to get the latest information on the Alliance, show your support and make sure you never miss an opportunity to make your voice heard.
